Today’s advancement of technology hinges largely on the search and development of new materials that ensure energy conservation, increased strength, and that can be used in new production technologies. These actions call for a joint effort  from representatives of different research domains and disciplines. The scope of the SciMat PRA covers such sciences as physics, material sciences, chemistry or mathematics. Actions in the SciMat area will be focused on four specific research domains:

1. Nanomaterials: this highly interdisciplinary domain covers problems related to the creation, analysis and design of new materials whose structure shows discreet organisation on a level below 100 nm, with a view to use them in the development of such fields as molecular and organic electronics, photonics, sensors, biotechnology and medicine, leaving door open to other disciplines in which such structures play a fundamental role by determining the operation of an entire system.

2. Materials related to energy generation and storage: the scope of this interdisciplinary research domain, which brings together research in physics and chemistry, will be related to the research with photovoltaics, fuel cells and energy storage.

3. Materials used in biotechnology and medicine: this interdisciplinary domain, which combines research in biophysics, biotechnology, biochemistry and medical physics and chemistry, will be mainly concerned with the investigations into biosensors, cell engineering, biointerfaces and prophylactics, diagnostics and therapy, including theranostics (which combines the latter on a molecular level), the basis for the modern personalised medicine.

4. New theoretical models and mathematical tools supported by the advancement of information technology and algorithmics: the scope of this multidisciplinary research domain, combining specific problems of physics and theoretical chemistry, molecular modelling, mathematical physics, mathematics and numerical methods, will range from the theory of complex dynamic systems, correlated systems, topological methods, differential geometry and geometric analysis to the theory of phase transitions, topological defects in quantum field theory and quantum information theory, exploring the sources of computational complexity to the problems occurring when describing advanced quantum materials, and the prediction and in silico design of materials and particles with desired properties.

  • Scholarship scheme (research scholarships) for students of SciMat PRA priority programmes. In the academic year 2021/2022 the SciMat PRA offers scholarships to first- and second-year students at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The best-performing students of the first-cycle priority programmes specified in the terms and conditions of the scheme, can apply for scholarships worth PLN 9,000 per grant, whereas first-year students of second-cycle programmes are offered scholarships of PLN 13,500 per grant. Call for proposals in the scholarship scheme is scheduled for March 2022, and will be announced in a separate communication at a later date. The terms and conditions of the scholarship scheme will be published at the beginning of the academic year 2021/2022. The principal terms of the scholarship scheme:

    • The scholarship will be paid for three months – from April to June 2022, in instalments of equal amount.
    • The scholarship is awarded solely to students in priority programmes of the SciMat PRA.
First-cycle programmes: Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (AMN), Physics, Physics for Business, Biophysics, Astronomy, Applied Computer Science, Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Sustainable Development Chemistry, Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Computer Science, Analytical Computer Science. Second-cycle programmes: Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (AMN), Physics, Biophysics, Astronomy, Applied Computer Science, Computer Games Science, Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry, Environmental Protection, Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Analytical Computer Science.
    • The main criterion for the compilation of a ranking list for first-year students (both first- and second-cycle programmes) will be the weighted average grades received in the winter semester in subjects graded semestrally, whereas for second-year students (both first- and second-cycle programmes) – weighted average grades received in the preceding year.
  • Scholarship scheme for doctoral students. In the 2021/22 academic year, additional scholarships for the best first-year doctoral students of the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of Jagiellonian University are planned for priority study programmes within the SciMat PRA. Detailed information about the scholarship scheme will be announced on the SciMat PRA website and provided to interested doctoral students.
  • Tutoring programme. In the 2021/22 academic year, we plan to continue the tutoring programme offered by the SciMat PRA for the best 1st and 2nd degree students studying in priority study programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The aim of the programme is to support the research development of the most talented students of the Faculty through keeping regular contact between the student and the tutor. Detailed information about the tutoring programme will be announced on the SciMat PRA website and provided to interested parties.

Information about the tutoring programme for the 2020/21 academic year can be found at: https://matinf.uj.edu.pl/kandydaci/oferta-dla-najlepszych/tutoring-w-ramach-scimat
