Purchase of a fluorescent cell counter
Within the framework of the Strategic Programme Excellence Initiative at Jagiellonian University (ID.UJ) - Priority Research Area "Better research for better quality of life - qLIFE", the the Faculty of Pharmacy of Jagiellonian University MC purchased a fluorescence cell counter, which has equipped the functioning cell culture laboratory.
The purchased instrument enables determination of the number and viability of cells in the examined samples, acting on the basis of double fluorescence staining with propidium iodide and acridine orange. This technique, which is an alternative to traditional trypan blue staining, allows very precise measurements, even in the case of difficult samples containing impurities such as particles, cell fragments or red blood cells. For this reason, the counter is particularly suitable for the determination of primary cells isolated from animal tissues. Built-in image analysis protocols also allow the size and degree of cell aggregation to be determined. However, the use of fluorescence detectors in the red and green light range enables basic cell staining analyses with any fluorophore with compatible spectral properties.
Purchase of the instrument was made with funding from the qLIFE Priority Research Area within the framework of the Strategic Programme “Excellence Initiative” at Jagiellonian University.
