Genesys 180 double beam spectrophotometer at the Faculty of Pharmacy
The Genesys 180 double beam spectrophotometer (Thermo Scientific), the purchase of which was funded by the qLIFE Priority Research Area under the "Excellence Initiative - Research University" programme at Jagiellonian University, enables measurements in the wavelength range of 190 - 1100 nm.
The device is equipped with both a standard single-position cell holder as well as an 8-position cell changer to facilitate the process of taking measurements. The light source is a xenon lamp which requires no warming up and ensures continuous measurements over the entire spectral range. The built-in software can work in absorbance, transmittance and optical intensity. It enables spectral measurements, quantitative analysis with calibration curves, time-resolved measurements and reaction kinetics studies.
The spectrophotometer will be used, inter alia, for:
- studies of compounds with radioprotective properties, including UV filters currently used in commercial cosmetics, as well as candidates for cosmetic product ingredients or radioprotective substances for active drug molecules;
- photostability of compounds, including substances to be used in cosmetic products (e.g. UV filters, melanogenesis inhibitors) or medicinal products for external use;
- determining the concentration of selected substances in a given sample, e.g. in studies of penetration of substances through epidermis, determination of logP parameter;
- studies on the kinetics of enzymatic reactions, e.g. in the field of inhibition of tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the process of melanogenesis.
The purchase was made with funding from the qLIFE Priority Research Area within the framework of the Strategic Programme “Excellence Initiative” at Jagiellonian University.
