DigiWorld call results: young researchers’ mini-grant project proposals 2021/1
The DigiWorld PRA announces the results of its mini-grants for the young 2021/1 call for research projects under the strategic programme Excellence Initiative at the Jagiellonian University in the academic year 2020/2021.
The call has seen 62 submissions in three categories (marked below as III, II and I respectively): from students of third-cycle programmes or students of a doctoral school (34 entries), students of second-cycle or of at least fourth year of integrated master’s programmes (19 entries), and students of first-cycle programmes or of the first to third year of integrated master’s programmes (9 entries). The evaluation committee awarded funding to 32 proposals: 18 (III), 9 (II) and 5 (I) in the respective categories. Thus the financial envelopes of individual categories have been changed ( PLN 350,650, PLN 134,880 and PLN 39,742 respectively), while maintaining approximately consistent success rate (i.e. the ratio of proposals recommended for funding to the proposals submitted). Below we present information on both applicants and laureates, the laureate list, the evaluation procedure, the members of the expert reviewer team and call statistics.
The maximum score in the call was 30 points (the mean average of the scores awarded by all reviewers). Recommended for funding were projects scoring at least: 18.75 (III), 19.5 (II) and 14.75 (I) points. Detailed reviews including justifications will be uploaded to the submission management system at digiworld.cm-uj.krakow.pl, where they will be available to the applicants.
We will contact the awarded project managers to grant them powers of attorney to disburse the funding, and to inform them of other administrative matters. With queries please contact the Office of the EI.JU (bartek.konecko@uj.edu.pl) with CC: digiworld@uj.edu.pl. Please type in [Young Mini-grants 2021/1] in the subject of your message.
Our heartiest congratulations to the laureates! Our thanks to all participants for showing their interest in the call!

Evaluation procedure:
The proposals were evaluated by a committee comprising three experts:
- prof. dr hab. Maciej Ogorzałek, Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science
- dr Dariusz Stolicki, Jagiellonian Centre for Quantitative Research in Political Science / Faculty of International and Political Studies
- dr Marek Śmieja, Chair in Machine Learning , Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science
Each proposal was thoroughly reviewed by two committee members. Dr Dariusz Stolicki abstained from the work of the committee due to a conflict of interest in the case of two proposals (mgr Daria Boratyn’s and mgr Natalia Stręk’s), whereas dr Marek Śmieja did not participate in the evaluation of proposals submitted by applicants representing the GMUM Group for Machine Learning Methods.
Each proposal was assigned also two domain experts selected from among the JU’s academic staff (and - in two cases - other research institutions) dealing with similar topics. The domain experts could not be employees of the department / chair represented by the applicant or their academic supervisor, nor members of the same research group. Similarly, they could not be supervisors of another proposal submitted to the same category with the proposal assigned them for evaluation. In the case of disciplines represented at more than one faculty, the expert was selected, wherever possible, from other faculty than the applicant’s.
The criteria of research quality, expected results, applicant’s / team’s achievements and supervisor’s achievements were evaluated exclusively by the experts. For other evaluation criteria grades awarded by the experts and by the committee members had equal weighting.
