The modernisation of lyophiliser and service of "La Chrom" liquid chromatograph in the Chair of Pharmaceutical Botany at Jagiellonian University
The Chair of Pharmaceutical Botany at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Jagiellonian University received funding for the modernisation of equipment from the qLIFE PRA funds, which made it possible to carry out the necessary modernisation and maintenance of two pieces of equipment - the LYPH.LOCK lyophiliser and the La Chrom liquid chromatograph.
Within the framework of the obtained funding, modernisation was carried out (installation of a modern pump) together with replacement of necessary components of the lyophiliser. Maintenance services were also performed, including replacement of spear and wear parts (gaskets, autosampler syringe, deuterium lamp).
The Chair of Pharmaceutical Botany conducts research in the field of biotechnology of plants and fungi, focusing on the analysis of bioactive metabolites in biomass obtained from in vitro cultures and plant/fungal material obtained from crops or natural sites. The plant/fungal material is lyophilised, then extracted. The Labconco freeze-dryer is the only instrument in the Chair to carry out this process. It is used continuously, so its modernisation and servicing are essential. Without this instrument, the work of the research team would be extremely difficult because the material would have to be sent to companies specialising in lyophilisation, which would entail a considerable waste of time and additional costs.
Another instrument - liquid chromatograph La Chrom is used in a continuous system for determination of metabolites important due to potential therapeutic application.
The most important studied metabolites with health-promoting effects are indole compounds with neurotransmitter properties, statins - lowastatin (anti-atherosclerotic effect), tyrosinase inhibitors, antioxidants: phenolic acids, flavonoids, sterols, ergothioneine. Servicing the liquid chromatograph is necessary to maintain the research potential of the team, as it is the basic instrument enabling research in the Chair of Pharmaceutical Botany.
Repair of the instrument was made with funding from the qLIFE Priority Research Area within the framework of the Strategic Programme “Excellence Initiative” at Jagiellonian University.
