An automatic selector with a capillary set to support the work of the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Physical Pharmacy

An automatic selector with a capillary set to support the work of the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Physical Pharmacy

The thematic scope at the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Physical Pharmacy is centred around pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic research on new biologically active compounds and search for new uses for known medicines. The research is supported with computer simulations using PK/PD models. Models of this kind are developed on the basis of such data as: concentrations of compounds in biological material and markers of response to a given compound. In order to arrive at such data one needs access to sensitive, selective and swift analytical methods. One of such methods, the most common in pharmacokinetic laboratories – university and industrial alike – is the LC-MS/MS technique.

The funding secured in the Call #11 enabled the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Physical Pharmacy to purchase a two-column selector with a capillary tube set. The device has been coupled with the UPLC system (Excion LC AC, Sciex) equipped with a mass spectrometer (QTRAP 4500, Sciex), already used by the Department. With the selector, it is possible to carry out consecutive analyses using two different columns with no need to swap during the measurements. It is thus possible to do multiple analyses independently of the operator’s control, e.g. at night, which considerably increases the unit’s throughput. The new purchase thus contributes to a significant acceleration in analytical work carried out at the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Physical Pharmacy not only for its own projects but also in collaboration with other entities within and outside the Faculty.

The purchase has been funded from the budget of the qLIFE Priority Research Area under the Strategic Programme Excellence Initiative at Jagiellonian University
