Tests on differentiating SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses – qLIFE PRA

Tests on differentiating SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses – qLIFE PRA

The research team led by prof. Tomasz Gosiewski and dr Dominika Salamon from the Chair of Microbiology of Jagiellonian University Medical College (Department of Molecular Medical Microbiology) as part of the project "Model of multidisciplinary hospital and out-of-hospital care for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection" SPECIALIST HOSPITAL /18/2020 - in a consortium with the University Hospital in Krakow - proposed the devising of a test based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) that differentiates the SARS-CoV-2 virus from influenza viruses, which may help in the rapid detection of COVID-19 and/or influenza. The test will be based on the analysis of a fluorescent microscope specimen from an upper respiratory swab collected from a patient with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19. Under the influence of UV rays, intense glow will be observed in the respiratory epithelial cells containing virus RNA.

The detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection is crucial in determining COVID-19 disease in a patient with symptoms of respiratory tract infection or its exclusion in the case of infection with other pathogens. The reference test is a molecular PCR test based on the detection of at least two virus-specific genes in a sample of respiratory secretion. The devising of alternative molecular (and therefore highly accurate) diagnostic methods is extremely important as this will increase the possibilities of recognizing infections, which should improve the efficiency of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The above research is possible thanks to the fluorescence microscope purchased from the qLIFE PRA funds.
