Biological Sample Repository: qLIFE PRA

Biological Sample Repository: qLIFE PRA

Since 2012 Jagiellonian University Medical College has worked in close concert with the University Hospital in Kraków on projects funded by the University and external sources, carried out on the Hospital's premises by JUMC researchers.

The year 2020 opened up a new chapter in the collaboration, as the two institutions established at the Department of Medical Diagnostics at the New University Hospital the joint Biological Sample Repository. The Repository provides researchers with an opportunity to work on, store and preserve biological material, and thanks to a comprehensive sample registration framework the University and the Hospital have direct access to the pool of biological material accumulated, including the type and quantity of the materials collected over the course of research, which otherwise used to be scattered across different entities and utilized by individual research projects.

The Repository has been equipped – from the funds of the programme Excellence Initiative at Jagiellonian University (EI.JU) in the Priority Research Area ‘Research Quality for Life Quality – qLIFE’) – with technology such as a high-speed centrifuge, medical freezing cabinet for storing blood plasma and cryoprecipitate, a –86°C ultra low temperature freezer and a medical refrigerator for storing blood and blood products with an on line wireless temperature monitoring system for the 3 devices combined.

From the outset, the Repository has been operated by senior students of the JUMC programme Medical Analytics at the Faculty of Pharmacy: Piotr Barasiński, Natalia Kaczocha, Wojciech Rebizant and Joanna Wierciak. To the young researchers, work at the Repository is an opportunity to participate in an endeavour of crucial importance to the advancement of the University. Their enthusiasm and commitment translate into high quality of the services offered by the Repository to researchers.

The purchase of the devices has been funded from the budget of the qLIFE Priority Research Area under the Strategic Programme Excellence Initiative at the Jagiellonian University.
